If you were not in class today…

These are the steps we did to create the speech outline (from the second copy of your essay)

1. Read the essay outloud and ensure you have 3 minutes.
2. Read the essay outloud again to see where you stop after 4 minutes.
3. Read the essay outloud again to see where you stop after 5 minutes.
4. Evaluate the text now for persuasive tone – what sounds the most persuasive.  It is better to have a 3 or 4 minute very persuasive speech, rather than a 5 minute so-so persuasive speech.  You may elect to only say one of your counter-arguments/refutation or only 2 of your main arguments.  You can add or take out sentences or sections of your text as long as you still have a clear intro, body and conclusion.
5. Time yourself again and see that you still have at least 3 minutes.
6. Open up your essay document, make the changes, rename it speech outline, print a copy and use that to practice.

Author’s Style

Please read this to further your understanding of Author’s Style :

Author’s Style

“Style is the dress of thoughts.”
(Lord Chesterfield)

“The style of an author should be the image of his mind, but the choice and command of language is the fruit of exercise.”
(Edward Gibbon)

“Style is not mere decoration, nor is it an end to itself; it is rather a way of finding and explaining what is true. Its purpose is not to impress but to express.”
(Richard Graves, “A Primer for Teaching Style.” College Composition and Communication, 1974)

“A good style should show no sign of effort. What is written should seem a happy accident.”
(W. Somerset Maugham, The Summing Up, 1938)

The style that an author uses influences how we interpret the facts that are presented. Wording and phrasing can tell us about emotions in the scene, the setting, and characters, etc.  Style, to a fiction writer, is basically the way he/she writes, as opposed to what you write about (though the two things are definitely linked). It results from things like word choice, tone, and syntax. It’s the voice readers “hear” when they read a literary work.

The version of a sentence that a writer chooses tells the reader a lot about the situation, the speaker, and the person being spoken to (the audience).  Consider the differences between the following sentences:

He’s passed away.

He’s sleeping with the fishes.

He died.

He’s gone to meet his Maker.

He kicked the bucket.

Some questions to consider when analyzing author’s style:

  • Author’s choice of setting and point of view: How does the setting impact the novel? In what point of view was each novel written? Why did the author choose the particular setting and point of view?
  • Author’s choice of conflict and plot: How did the author use conflict in the plot to move the stories from the beginning to the end?
  • Author’s choice of character interactions and conflict within the plot of the novels: How do the character’s relationships, communications, and conflicts affect the plot? Make sure to discuss the type of characters, e.g. flat, round, dynamic, and static and why the author chose the characters to be that type.
  • Author’s choice of theme: Identify similar themes that the author uses across the novels?
  • Author’s choice of figurative language: How does the author use figurative language, sound devices and literary techniques in the novels?
  • Author’s choice of genre: How did the author’s choice of genre affect the theme or topic?
  • Author’s choice of mood and tone: What are ways the author shows mood and tone through word choice, figurative language and syntax?
  • Author’s choice of symbols: How does the author’s choice of symbols give deeper meaning to the story?
